Expert’s Comment : The Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal was conferred as a personal souvenir from the Sovereign, presented to members of the Royal Family and a carefully chosen group of recipients across Britain, her colonies and the Dominions. These included selected officers of state, members of the Royal Household, government officials, mayors, public servants and local government officers, as well as serving personnel of the navy, army, air force and police. Members of the 1953 British Mount Everest expedition also received the medal, two of whom had reached the summit just four days before the coronation. Struck in silver at the Royal Mint and weighing 24.92 grams, the medal was issued immediately after the ceremony. It remains a tangible link to a defining moment in modern British history and continues to attract interest from collectors of royal and commemorative medals.
