Rare Error Die Fill Two Annas Victoria Empress 1880 (Key Date) ‘C’ Incused Calcutta Mint (Obv B, Rev II) Silver Coin, British India Uniform Coinage, Collectible.
Approx Weight – 1.45 grams,
Approx Diameter – 15 mm
Expert’s Comment : The year 1880 is a key date across all the silver fractional denominations of the Victoria Empress series, and the 2 Annas of that year is especially difficult to locate in a high state of preservation. This example carries an additional point of interest: a die fill error, in which the “E” of EMPRESS is entirely absent. The recessed portion of the die that would have formed the letter had become clogged, so it could not transfer an impression to the flan during striking. The combination of a key date, superior grade and a distinct minting error makes this a compelling piece for specialist collectors.
