Expert’s Comment : Brockage ranks among the more complex errors that can occur on a coin. It begins when a previously struck coin becomes lodged in the press and, instead of being ejected, remains between the dies. This stuck coin then acts as a die itself, striking the next blank and imprinting an inverted, mirror-image design on the error coin. On this One Rupee of George V from the British India Uniform Coinage series, the brockage is of the obverse, so the piece carries the King’s portrait on both faces: one a normal strike, the other an incuse mirror image. As the reverse design is entirely absent, the coin shows neither its denomination nor its date, and it carries no mint mark. Its denomination is established solely by its diameter and weight. Brockage errors from British India are now exceedingly difficult to find, for three reasons. First, error coins were routinely discarded during quality checks at the mint. Second, British India errors are scarce in their own right. Third, the intricate mechanics behind a brockage make it one of the least likely errors to occur and to escape detection.
