Set of 4 Edward VII King – Edward VII (1841-1910 CE) was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was preceded by his mother Queen Victoria (r. 1837-1901 CE). He was made Prince of Wales and Duke of Chester and served as one of the country’s longest serving heir-apparents.

Queen Victoria’s death in 1901 CE resulted in Edward becoming Edward VII, King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Emperor of India. His visit to France in 1903 CE paved the way for Entente Cordiale, a treaty between England and France that boosted their alliance before World War I. His championing of military and naval reforms left the country prepared for the Great War. His short reign (r. 1901-1910 CE) proved that even as a figurehead, the monarch was an important part of British life.

During his reign, the Swadeshi movement began in India which was one of the early sparks of the Indian independence movement. The Indian Councils Act (1909) was also passed which increased the participation of the Indian legislators on the one hand and introduced separate electorates on the basis of religion on the other. In British India, coins were issued in his name from 1903 CE to 1910 CE. He died aged sixty-eight. He was succeeded by his son George V.
