Set of 3 Victoria Empress – Queen Victoria (1819-1901) was the only daughter of Edward and Victoria, duke and duchess of Kent. Victoria became Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland when her uncle King William IV died without any legitimate issue in 1837 CE. 

In India, Queen Victoria’s reign was a period of transformative changes. The English East India Company reached the zenith of its power during the early part of her reign. However, a number of factors ranging from the Company’s aggressive policy towards the regional states to the ill-treatment of the native soldiers serving in the Company’s army led to the biggest revolt in British India’s history: the Great Revolt of 1857 CE, also known as the Sepoy Mutiny. The British were able to crush the revolt and the titular head of the revolt, the Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar was deposed and exiled. The Mughal rule in India officially came to an end in 1858 CE. The British Crown took over administrative responsibilities of India directly. In 1877 CE, Victoria was christened as the ‘Empress of India’ and this momentous event brought her back into public life and popularity.

Her long reign (r. 1837-1901 CE) saw a transformation of the British nation and by the time of her death, the United Kingdom had become the most powerful state in the world, controlling one-fifths of the world’s total landmass and a quarter of its population through its colonial empire. She was succeeded by her son Edward VII.
