1 Fanon (1/5 Rupee) 173X (Possibly 1738 CE) Letter ‘P’ Bhultcheri (Pondicherry) Mint Silver Coin, French India – Mahe, Extra Fine +.
Approx Weight – 2.28 grams,
Approx Diameter – 14 mm
Expert’s Comment : The letter “P” on this Fanon (one-fifth Rupee) issued by the French in India denotes the Pondicherry mint. Because these coins were hammered and are small in module, the die often struck only part of the design on the flan, and most surviving specimens have the date cut off or falling outside the edge of the flan. Examples that retain a full, legible date are therefore uncommon, and they are especially difficult to acquire for collectors of French Indian coinage.
