Set of 2 George V King – George V (1865-1936 CE) was the second eldest son of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. He was preceded by his father Edward VII. His elder brother’s untimely death in 1892 CE led George to become the duke of York. He became the prince of Wales when Queen Victoria died in 1901. Less than a decade later, Edward VII died and George was crowned as the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Emperor of India.

As king, George V had to play a role in resolving the constitutional crisis involving the reduction of the power of the House of Lords. During his reign (1910-1936 CE), he led his nation through World War I, frequently visiting soldiers stationed in France to raise their morale.

In India, George V’s reign coincided with the rise of great Indian politicians and thinkers like Mohandas K. Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Both violent local movements and non-violent mass-movements challenged the British authority. Government of India Acts passed in 1919 CE and 1935 CE gave Indian parties and politicians a stake in the governance of provinces. B. R. Ambedkar emerged as the leader of the Dalit politics and political divide along communal lines was stregthened. Coins were issued in his name from 1911 CE to 1936 CE. He died aged seventy. He was succeeded by his son Edward VIII.
